Question: I'll be travelling in Germany, Switzerland and Italy in May. Iam Indian and need Visa for entry in any European country. In ourtravel plan, I will be going from Munich to Venice on a overnighttrain. The train cross some portions of Austria. We have Eurail pass, so our pass is going to be valid in Germany, Austria as well as Italy. My question is do I need Visa for travelling through Austria. I am notgoing to get down anywhere in Austria anyway. If I don't go direct ....... I'm very interested to know the answer. Because I'll be traveling withsomeone who needs a VISA to Germany & Austria; but we are going from Paristo Prague and we are NOT getting off in Germany & Austria. Should a VISAbe needed? Thank you in anticipation of any response.
Answer: A visa is needed as you could easily get off the train at any stop. As already was mentioned in the "Austrian bureau-crazy" thread, Autrian boarder officials act in a very bureaucratic way nowadays. So I would not recommend to try it. The only exception are the so-called corridor trains which run without stop through a foreign country and return to their country of origin, e.g. trains from Vienna to Innsbruck leave Austria near Salzburg and enter again at Kufstein and can be used without travel documents valid to enter Germany. BTW, if you travel from Paris to Prague, you do not need to travel through Austria.
