Question:
1) Can anyone reccomend a hotel that has it's own bathroom at a VERY
affordable price?
I have received quotes for air, hotel, taxes, breafast of $865.00 per
person. Is this a good price? The hotel is tulip inn (I think). Now
if this is a good package price for 7 days march 7th to the 15th, I will
book it. Leaving from Rhode Island to Amsterdam straight through
flight. But can anyone offer advice here?
2) What is the considered ediqute for taking pictures in shops, stores,
exhibits, shows, coffee shops? I really don't want to offend anyone and
I want to make sure I understand their culture before I insult anyone.
I want to have a good time, but don't want to make anyone feel
uncomfortable.
3) About the coffee shops. Is there an ediqute used in them??? I plan
on visiting them, but don't want to make people uncomfortable by not
knowing what to do and say.
4) On the basis of the above, can you smoke in hotel rooms? Are there
hotels that will not let you smoke marijuana?
5) Can anyone reccomend any places to eat & dance?
6) What should I stay away from?
Answer:
1. I stay at the Hotel de Stadhouder most of the time...it's cheap and
the Tulip isn't bad...so it works out ok...but it's not a steal...airfare
that time of year though shouldn't run over $350 if you shop hard...and the
stadhouder is about 80nfl a night or about 45$...so 315$ for 7 nights...but the tulip is nicer than the stadhouder.
2. many shows, exhibitions, museums, etc restrict photography.
I've never seen a store I wanted to take a picture of but I guess it's
ok...ask.
Coffee Shops...I've heard you shouldn't...but it doesn't bother me...some
nice straight older tourist couples came into the Grasshopper on N.Z.
Voorburgwaal one morning while I was having my morning coffee, newspaper,
and stickie (joint) smiled and took a picture of the place...nobody
minded...it's a nice place after all.
3. in the tourist zone coffee shops just ask for the menu...at the Grasshopper
you press the button next to the smoked glass and it lights up...someplaces
have sample books as menus...others a card or a blackboard.
in regular non-tourist (non-english speaking) dutch coffee shops you may
have a little harder time getting them to understand you want the dope menu
but I've never had a real problem.
papers are usually on the bar...as well as cardboard roll up filters...don't
buy the most expensive variety in a tourist shop...it's almost always a
sucker buy.
4. I'm sure there must be some...probably the christian youth hostels...they
-may- be non-smoking/non-drinking...but at the Tulip or any regular hotel
you can smoke in any smoking room....it's effectively legal on the same
level as smoking cigs in the states...you generally don't smoke dope in
regular brown cafes and restaurants...of course not in museums either.
5. to eat...the Golden Chopsticks...1 Oude Doulenstraat in the red light
district (from dam square head into the district, it's on the left
DOWNSTAIRS under china corner (the fancy place upstairs)...really good food
cheap, get the mussels (like split an order if there are at least 2 people
and then add an entree) as they're a very good deal and very good (they're
from zeeland (no not NEW zeeland, north or south zeeland in the netherlands
and belgium).
I don't dance.
6. don't even maybe buy street dope...you WILL be solicited.
