Question:
WIN A WEEKEND BREAK IN AMSTERDAM WITH AMSTERDAM TRAVEL SERVICE

If I didn't know better, I'd say there was something sinister hereabouts.Unsure of my bearings, I consult my map. "Danger Area" is plastered in redacross it. To my left is the turn-off to a ghostly village: population zero.A church, yes; an old manor house, yes; cottages, yes. Completely desertedfor 56 years, although fortunately there's a good reason.

The map reveals that I am about five miles east of a famous coastal feature,to which I motor with all haste. On the way, I pass a castle built in 1608and owned by the same family since 1641. It hit the headlines in 1929 whenit was gutted by fire, and for decades stood as a ruin until recently beingrestored. A mile or so beyond, I take a sharp left turn and descend thesteep, narrow road to a horseshoe bay, once the home of pirates andsmugglers.

I leave the car to find myself in a geologist's paradise. Here, MotherNature hiccuped; what once were horizontal rock strata now jab skywards. Thelandscape continues to change to this day, and I soon discover a spot wherethe seaward-facing barrier of hard rock has been punctured, allowing thewaves to scoop out the softer rock behind - the germ of a new bay.

I retrace my footsteps and head west along a steep clifftop footpath, turning every now and then to admire the view behind me. The further Iclimb, the more spectacular it is, and the more puffed I become. After abreathless mile, I come to a promontory, on either side of which are smallsheltered bays. From here I can see a bull, a cow, a blind cow, a calf and abat's head - yet this is no menagerie. And were I to walk just a littlefurther, I'd have an encounter with a scratchy bottom! These, however, arenothing compared to the star feature: a magnificent arch on the promontory'swestern edge, carved by the sea from solid rock, the same rock used to builda very famous cathedral.

Keen to inspect it at close quarters, I descend what seems like scores ofsteps to the shingle beach below. There I peer through the arch to the oceanbeyond. This rock is 150m years old; what must it have witnessed? And whatwill it make of the new millennium, a mere speck in the annals of time?

THE QUESTIONS

1 What is the name of the ghostly village?

2 What is the name of the arch?
