Question:
I was wondering how the Noordam/Nieuw Amsterdam compare to the newerStatendam-class ships as far as atmosphere, amenities, andcleanliness/maint. What I most value in a liner is lots of open deck spaceand spacious public areas (I get kind of claustrophobic & bored on smallerships). Does the addition of veranda cabins on the newer ships seem totake away from the amount of avail. deck space ? I also appreciate a more"classic" decor (wood & brass vs. plastic & neon) - so how do the HALships measure up in this regard ? Finally, does anyone know when the lasttime the older ships were renovated ? and does HAL do a good job re:maint. on their ships ? All info., opinions, and general ranting & ravingwelcome.

Answer: We have cruised all of the above. Of course the Statendam, being one ofHAL's newest ships, is absolutely gorgeous! And of course everything isbrand new. However, as far as atmosphere, amenities, andcleanliness/maint., I'd have to say they are all GREAT. Not that we noticed. There is a lot of deck space everywhere.

I also appreciate a morePlenty of wood & brass. Decor is very elegant. Art work galore. Lots to see.
